I’m not saying it’s not fascism. I agree with you. But comparing us to Germany isn’t going to get anyone else to pay attention who isn’t already paying attention. Do you know what the oversimplified and stupid response to your comparison will be? “They’re not being antisemitic.”

People hear “Nazi Germany” and just think about the Holocaust in a gross oversimplification. They don’t see that the new “Jew” is just the liberal, the “communist-terrorist,” the “mentally ill.” There is no one “other” this time. There doesn’t really need to be, though.

If you want to engage people, the collapse of the USSR is another historical parallel we are mirroring, not the collapse itself, but the takeover of power by oligarchs and state actors right after. We are quickly heading toward that point.

These fascists are going to crash the world economy. What that means, I don’t know. Maybe just a new digital currency, maybe a new military-industrial complex, but when our economy fails, it will play out like the economic capture of the Russian government after the fall of the USSR.

My thinking is too many people are comparing us to Germany and not enough people are thinking about the colapse of the USSR. This doesn’t look like consolidation of power to me. This looks like turning off all the pressure values so they can point and say “look how corrupt and broken everything is!” when it all explodes. It’s not Hitler, Its some fusion of Putin tatics. People are going to die. This is the gas for a worldwide crisis.

I remember watching documentaries about Hungary on YouTube back around 2010-2012. We were all worried then that it would happen here. Hungary and (Russia) and how they treated political rivals. That’s when I started voting consistently. Not that it mattered. I used to point to Hungary as an example of what could happen here. The Daily show even talked about them when Trump first came to power in 2016. It was always there but we were always looking elsewhere.

Hungary is much smaller than the US though, even if it is mostly empty, like Russia.

Having looked at the NSFW Lemmy instance, I 100% expect the Reddit refugees will try to host their own instances. Some of them. I also expect them to be defederated pretty quickly.

It’s a bit of a mixed experience. Overall, federation has its benefits, but it also tends to encourage cliquish behavior among groups. Sometimes, entire servers get blacklisted for various reasons. Reddit has a lot of corners that don’t violate its current ToS but are generally ignored by the community at large. These are NSFW spaces usually. In federation the ToS isn’t usually about pleasing the most people and pulling them into your platform, it’s more about the ideals of your server admin team. That’s a good thing, I suppose. It’ll be interesting to see how things play out with Lemmy instances when Reddit bans porn.

Trauma works too. I’ve got the ADHD but I really think it’s the trauma knowledge that makes it. ADHD makes the delivery, truama makes the material. The number of times someone has laughted when I said something that was basically just truth in a flat tone…if they only knew.

You don’t ususally get that cool-deadpan-no-filter comedy style without a little trauma on the back end.

How is the CIA working against Russian, Chinese, or…I don’t know even British intelligence? What are they pushing back against? What data are they collecting? what contacts and assets are they making? I don’t like that the CIA topples socialist governments but I’m not an idiot. What are we supposed to do? We’ve passed the point of peaceful protest. We can no longer organize quickly or effectively. The popular forums have all been taken, and while new ones are emerging, it may be too late by the time they grow. Maybe if TikTok hadn’t bent the knee, but it was always going to. Calls for violence will be quickly dismissed, as they always are, by rational, hopeful people. I’m not saying that violence is the answer, anyway. Any violence now would lead to disorganization, be crushed, and ultimately just fuel the system.

You can’t talk your way out of this. You can’t legislate your way out of it. What needs to happen can no longer happen. So what will happen is what always happens…the changing of power. My trans friend is desperately trying to reach out to our state representative, and I wish there was something I could do. Another friend just got his dream job as a librarian, but it’s a shame how things are going.

I often wonder what the SS or the KGB would have been like with today’s data networks. What can we do? Wipe your social media presence, or sterilize it. My opinion is you’re better off deleting it until the window for them to legally delete your data has passed and then rejoining. Who knows what long gone chats or deleted posts might hit you in the future. Consider who you’re connected to, and get them to do the same. Every time I hear my roommate say, “Okay, Google,” my anxiety spikes. She’s gay.

What are we supposed to do now? The government, the media, and social platforms have all been captured. We’re conquered, caged, and trapped in the net. And the net is only going to shrink. We still need our circuses, but they’ve got everything they need to track and monitor us, our phones, computers, ISPs, social media, apps, even our friends’ apps and browsers.

If you’re staying and not actively fighting, scrub your data while you still can. Find a phone you can install a secure OS on (one that isn’t locked by verizon or ATT) and get rid of Google, get a VPN, remove everything from your main computer, invest in an encrypted hard drive, and download your favorite shows and books. Tomorrow, they might be wiped. VPNs could even be outlawed for personal use. Get what you can while you can, but keep it off your Windows hard drives. Think about deleting your streaming services. (I’m serious) What you have watched could be used to profile you. If you plan to protest, leave your phone at home. Don’t discuss these things, even jokingly, on any platform that isn’t encrypted—not even Discord. You don’t know how bad this will get. No one can know. We were taught ONE major genocide event in schools for the most part. We found our own lessons on fascism. There were dozen if not hundreds of genocides and power changes that just get forgotten.
