Not that you asked but maybe an anecdote can help? My lil bro has like… more DUIs under his belt than I have cats… (I have 2). He lost his partner of over a decade and ended up in jail (a number of times for drinking) and eventually in front of an empathetic but dead serious judge. It’s been a year a half of sobriety for him, finally. And now he’s focused on learning hobby radio stuff and nerding out on linux. It took time, though. Grieving isn’t a linear process. You got this.

When I was a child (80s) growing up in Germany I had to lie and say I was Canadian. I recommend this strategy.

It’s crazy they’re taught about the holocaust but are in favor of the same ideals. Anecdotally, the younger gen in the US that I interact with are either intentionally clueless and/or hate filled. (a lot of my coworkers are gen y and I see a lot of the gen Z online - ie Musk’s DOGE fuks - being unfortunately naturally fashy.) I think this new fascism might be even worse than the mid 1900s because the people now, for the most part, know and still choose hate. Just my opinion.

Really sucks that part of the whole WWII agreement was to disarm much of Europe. They’re in such a weak militaristic position now. I mean… I get it and why it was the agreement given how the holocaust happened and all but it really made them sitting ducks. Being dependent on the US was the equivalent to putting all your eggs in one basket. I know they’re going to try to move ahead on becoming sovereign, and ofc they should but any move that causes strife and need in the general population will only push voters to the right. I hate how stupid and predictable the human species can be.
