So why is he there then instead of someone who at least understands the business a bit?

Plenty of takers for that salary.

      He understands the business.

He doesn’t understand technical details, which is something very different.

He tells people “go find the ideal route”. He doesn’t find the ideal route himself.

If a CEO of a large company attempted to learn all skills of every single one of his employees, he would spend a couple centuries learning, instead of doing his job.

His job being: Telling the right people to find the ideal route.

And he himself clearly isn’t one of these people. And he doesn’t need to be.

(You wouldn’t expect Tim Cook to know every legal detail of all the countries he trades to either. Because that’s not his job. His job is to hire lawyers who know every legal detail of all the countries he trades to.)

Though he might be ridiculed less if instead of posting on xitter he went to one of his workers who work in this field and ask them why the flight plan was plotted that way.

Yeah I was like if he works in logistics while not ask an employee, surely he’d have a CTO or someone technical nearby to grab?

LMAO, yeah, you’re a Trumper. Can’t even stay on one position between two comments: does he understand the business(no) or not?

          I’m European.

Do you not understand the difference between business management and technical engineering?

He understands business management. He doesn’t understand particular technical aspects.

Expecting the CEO to posess all the skills of all his employees is foolish.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect absurd qualifications for an absurd salary, let alone a broad understanding of the basics of his industry.

Broadly, I agree that CEOs of large companies should have outstanding qualification.

But since specific knowledge like what the post is about isn’t core to their job, I think it’s fine for them to sometimes ask some less knowledgable questions.

I certainly do not agree that “[this] should radicalize you”.

Do you believe you’re the only person in this thread that understands the world? Every comment you’ve made is HEAVILY downvoted without a single upvote, don’t you think if you were even remotely right at least ONE person would agree?

Also, I tend to not believe you live anywhere but America, you sound like every Trumpet I know.

I believe that this community (and Lemmy as a whole) is extremely left wing (with many considering themselves communists).

The only thing the downvotes tell me is that my views don’t align with the views of armchair communists who go CEO=stupid whenever an opportunity arises.

Claiming that the CEO doesn’t deserve the wealth that he (probably) has is understandable; claiming that he isn’t fit for his job (based of this post alone) is ridiculous.

Regarding my nationality: A quick look into my comment history will show you that I regularly participate in German-speaking communities.

Well your degradation of the entire userbase of the site you’re using is very convincing. Classic conservative alright. If you disagree with Lemmings on the whole, leave?

Well your degradation of the entire userbase of the site you’re using

I only considered Lemmy to be extremely left leaning; that is not intended to be degrading.

I assume many people in this comment section specifically to be armchair communists (which is intended to sound degrading) but those don’t represent Lemmy as a whole.

                  is very convincing

It wasn’t intended to convince you of anything, it was only a simple retaliation for your needless attempt to invalidate my view by simple down/up-vote counting.

                  Classic conservative alright.

Everyone who disagrees with you on a singular issue (that issue being whether one specific person is fit for their job) is a conservative, yeah.

You must exist in an extremely small bubble.

If you disagree with Lemmings on the whole, leave?

I don’t disagree with Lemmings on the whole, and even if I did, I don’t mind. I don’t need a bubble; I can talk to people I disagree with.

Ultimately most of what you have said is right.

I’ve worked in business acquisitions and management, and I have a minor in business from MIT Sloan; folks at the top don’t need to understand the technical details, they just need to find the best people. When I run teams, I try to make sure I am dumbest person on that team. My purpose there is seeing the bigger picture and managing timelines, not getting into technical details despite my desires to.

Humorously, this whole thread is full of people upset that the CEO doesn’t know about great circle paths, but that’s not the reason the flight path isn’t straight in this case. I’m also a pilot, and aircraft follow ATC directed high altitude routes that generally follow great circle paths over long distances, but tend to be jagged along the way. This is one of my flights from [Boston to DC(https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/ab38ea61-4a85-44d1-a916-b1d8fd44084a.jpeg).

Where I can agree with the vitriol of every commenter, is that this CEO is being very dumb presenting the question to the internet and that along might be a sign they are not fit for the job.

I do wish I could find communities with more even-handed discussion. These ideological hell cages make me never want to comment which hurts Lemmy over all. There just doesn’t seem to be nuanced discussion on the internet anymore.
