This was absolutely stunning to look at and it was very easy to get invested in the characters and their relationship. The way it’s shot and animated gave everything a very vibrant and wacky energy that set the tone very well.
… However. Momo’s scene with the aliens was extremely uncomfortable to watch. Ken’s side of the plot where his “weenie” is stolen (or just possessed?) by the granny ghost is only better in that they didn’t show that to us. I really want to like this, but it just feels too based in sexual assault of minors ?? Can someone familiar with the source material let me know if this is a show about weird sex stuff (no judgement, just not for me) or if that was a bit of a one-off that will get toned down or left behind going forward?
It did make me uncomfortable, but that scene didn’t have that specific vibe that you might see elsewhere. I think it was actually meant to evoke discomfort, although not too intense because of the absurdity of the whole situation. I don’t know how to describe it exactly, but the flavour of discomfort is different. I have dropped other shows because it just weirded me out too much.
Basically I want to believe that this isn’t the author/artist’s weird interests being forced in and just non-sexualized artistic expression, but I haven’t read the source material so idk how the rest of the anime is gonna go.
As far as I remember there is one other scene like this in Dandadan, out of over 150 chapters. So it’s not the main focus, but this is also not the last time.
I totally get it though. I bounced off this manga the first time I tried to read it because of that scene.
Creepy Nuts and zutomayo‽ Fucking hell yeah!
The animation is amazing it felt like a fever dream, and the characters’ voices sounded so crunchy 👌
And somehow it also isn’t a gag anime. I’m sooo gonna enjoy this.
After watching this episode, I finally get this reference in 100gf:
Note that Turbo Granny isn’t a Dandadan-specific reference. She’s a well-known Japanese urban legend.
Holy hell, that was a trip. I have no idea where we go from here when it comes to the plot. Did they just out the existence of aliens to the rest of the world?
The production of this show was fantastic. Science SARU gathered their A team for this one and it shows. A visual treat from beginning to end. I love it when anime really leans into wacky animation, something Studio Trigger does really well. There was tons of it this episode with the visual styles changing constantly throughout the episode.
